Man Overboard

Here are the words to the first song of my solo project that I’m pleased with. A year of dabbling in a bunch of ideas that I tossed out have finally led to a groove that I’m fitting comfortably in. These words do have a musical vehicle but I’ll share that later. Right now that vehicle is still being built with the assistance of some brilliant musicians—but more on them later too. Because I’d like to talk about them more specifically and with greater detail as this process unfolds. For now just a few words from my sponsor (me).

MAN OVERBOARD

Did you know the storm was on its way

Or were you taken by surprise

I thought I heard laughter as it hit

I’m sure I heard a cry

I didn’t see the clouds as they came

I was caught in the changing colours in your eyes

Now the sun on a beach by an isle

Suddenly the gray of brooding skies

Did we look away or were we unaware

Everytime a line of crimson cut through the air

Man overboard

This ship’s run aground

It wasn’t all for nothing

I am safe and sound

I saw you go under

Watched as you went down

I hope it wasn’t all for nothing

And that you’re safe and sound

Do you ever wish that we had shifted course

Turned this thing around

Far away from the shore

Headlong into the unknown

To be lost, to be lost, better lost than found

I thought we were ok, that we had realigned

But the lodestar you were looking at

Was not the same as mine

By the time we noticed the stars had already crossed

Too late to unbow the albatross

Did we look away or were we unprepared

Everytime a trail of crimson cut through the air

Man overboard

This ship’s run aground

It wasn’t all for nothing

I am safe and sound

I saw you go under

Watched as you went down

I hope it wasn’t all for nothing

And that you’re safe and sound
